M.Sc. – Mathematics

Post Graduate Department of  MATHEMATICS established in the year 2010 offers a two year PG Programme in MATHEMATICS.  M.Sc  in Mathematics is  specialized in academia and industry. The Research and Development section of every Industry requires personnel who are trained in data analysis . There is a great need of personnel in teaching profession and in pure research . The students who complete MSc Mathematics will get respectable intellectual level seeking to expose scientific research orientation in Mathematics. The curriculum is designed to provide academic competence in the areas of both theoretical and applied mathematics, enhancing the professional objectives of students. The Course is definitely at par if not less with many of the famous institutes who offer a post graduate degree in Mathematics.

Objectives
To generate manpower trained in Mathematics to meet the need of Industry and academia .
To equip students with knowledge of principles, theories and concepts of mathematics, which will help them to become responsible leaders in their chosen fields.
To train students to pursue research in the field of pure and applied mathematics
To impart training in Mathematics to apply it in the field of Information Technology
To develop the personality of the individual by giving them the necessary skills.
To offer 100% placement assistance
To prepare students who are seeking careers in government service.
To lay the foundation for teaching for students who plan to enter the profession of teaching.

Duration of the Programme
The duration of M.Sc. in Mathematics shall be 4 semesters (2 years). Each semester comprises of eighteen weeks duration, including Continuous Evaluation and Internal examinations. The course also includes Computational Lab Practicals.

Credit based System
The programme follows Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) with a total of 100 credits. Each semester will have 25 credits. One choice based course of 4 credits shall be offered in the Third Semester of the programme within the faculty or across the faculty. Every course comprises of lecture – seminar -assignment – self-study – continuous assessment schedule. The minimum number of credits to be earned for the award of the degree is 100.

Special Features of the Department
RURAL EXPOSURE PROGRAMME: A week long Rural Exposure programme is included as a part of curriculum in the III Semester. It is compulsory for all students pursuing PG Courses in St. Aloysius College.
EDUCATIONAL TOUR: To expose students to practical situations, the department organizes educational tours to various industries, research institutes, libraries etc.
STUDENT FACULTY PROGRAMME: To enhance the teaching skills the students are given an opportunity to take classes for the Undergraduate students. This helps the students to know their strength and weakness, to gain confidence to teach and to build interpersonal relationships.
SOFT SKILL TRAINING: The overall development of the students is enhanced through various soft skills and English language training programmes.
Coaching for Competitive Examinations like NET/SLET, IAS, IBPS etc.
CERTIFICATE COURSE on MATHEMATICA and LATEX is offered by the department .
PROJECT WORK: It provides opportunities to students to learn practical aspects that cannot be taught in a class room.

Extra Curricular Activities:
Interclass competition in photography, collage, cooking, face painting , rangoli etc.
Sports day.
PG Day “ SANGAM” Interclass Cultural Programme.
MatriX Association Activities.
Intercollegiate PU and Undergraduate Level Competitions are Organized every year on behalf of Birth Memorial Celebrations of Prof. K.A Krishnamurthy who was an eminent professor of Mathematics at St Aloysius College for more than 4 decades.

Intercollegiate Undergraduate Level Competitions are organized every year on behalf of Birth Memorial Celebrations of Prof. K.A.Krishnamurthy who was an eminent professor of Mathematics at St Aloysius College for more than 4 decades.

The PG degree programme M.Sc. in Mathematics prepares a student for a wide range of professional careers. Some of them are:

TEACHING: For PUC, Central Schools, Degree Courses in B.Sc. Mathematics,   PG Courses in Mathematics, Professional Courses engineering.

HIGHER STUDIES: On completion of M.Sc. in Mathematics students can pursue higher studies like M.Phil, Ph.D , etc. Clearing of JRF examination will enable the students eligible for scholarships during their Ph.D studies.

RESEARCH: On completion of  Ph. D. as Research Assistant, Research Associate, Research Coordinator, Project Fellow Director of  Research Projects. Several Universities and Institutions of Higher learning provide opportunities for research.

BANKING: In RBI as Officer, as specialized Officer in NABARD, IDFC etc, Nationalized Banks, Private Commercial Banks / Foreign Banks, Cooperative Banks.

The M. Sc Mathematics Programme shall comprise “Core” and “Open Elective” Courses. The “Core” courses shall further consists of “Hard core” and “Soft core” courses. Hard core courses shall have 5 credits and the soft core courses shall have 4 credits. Also, to have better flexibility in introducing the courses, additional optional courses are offered under ‘Soft Core’ category. Open electives shall have 3 credits. Total credit for the programme shall be 92 including open electives.

Core courses are related to the discipline of the M. Sc Mathematics programme. Hard core courses are compulsorily studied by a student as a core requirement to complete the programme. Soft core courses are electives but are related to the discipline of the programme. Two open

elective courses of  3 credits each shall be offered in the II and III semester by the department. Open elective will be chosen from an unrelated programme within the faculty.

Total credit for the M.Sc  Mathematics  programme is 92. Out of the total 92 credits of the programme, the hard core  shall make up 58.69%  of the total credits; soft core  is 34.78%  while the open electives will have a fixed 6 credits.
