St. Aloysius College is the first college in coastal Karnataka to start the biotechnology course during 2001. The department has all the basic facilities and infrastructure to cater to the needs of students while imparting necessary practical skills in addition to theoretical knowledge. Programme aims at providing up-to-date knowledge, skills and core facilities in this field. The department has well equipped spacious laboratory, offers hands-on training with all laboratory instruments and training programmes in the field of Molecular Biology and Plant tissue culture. Department has initiated a student-centered activity – “The World of Biological Science” project which is aimed at promoting & encouraging the students of high school & college to make Biological Sciences their choice for further study. Trained final year Biotechnology students are the resource persons for this project and have covered many rural and urban schools. The department wall magazine: ‘Syngene’ for display of scientific research articles, biotechnology related news and information, career opportunities etc. It also publishes newsletter: ‘Biobugle’ from 2009.
