BT Finishing School

The rapidly growing biotechnology sector in Karnataka has been facing severe shortage of industry-ready graduates and post-graduates for a long time. In an effort to fulfill the needs of the industry, the Karnataka Government in association with the Vision Group, ABLE and Industry representatives has developed a mechanism to provide employment opportunities in the sector. In the Millennium Biotech Policy-II, the Government of Karnataka initiated the establishment of finishing school programs across the state. SAC was selected to start PG diploma courses in two Domains under the Bio –Technology Finishing School (BTFS) programme from September 2011.


  • Educate & empower human resource to bridge the employability gap between industry & academia.
  • Train graduates and post graduates of life sciences to be industry ready for employment (see below for eligibility criteria).
  • Create Biotechnology R&D environment in BTFS institutions.
  • Secure internship slots during the program and help in job placements after program completion.


The College offers Two Post Graduate Diploma courses in Specialized Biotechnology-related job-oriented courses under BTFS. The domains are:

  • Fermentation and Bio-processing
  • Plant Tissue Culture and Micro-propagation.


Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India has agreed to extend a fellowship support of Rs. 5000/- per month to every student enrolled in the BTFS program.


Total duration: 12 months

Course work: 6 months, in the concerned Industry.

Internship: 6 months, in the concerned Industry.

The facilities available under this program:

Excellent infrastructure with support from Karnataka Government to the tune of 1 crore:

Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), (Hitachi, Japan), Atomic absorption spectrophotometer (Perkin Elmer), Quantitative Real Time PCR ( Applied Biosystems), UV-Vis spectrophotometer and ELISA plate reader (Thermo Fischer), Fermentor 5L ( Scigenics), Orbital shaker (Scigenics), Sonicator, (Symbiogen), -80 °C Deep freezer (Cryo scientific), Refrigerated high speed centrifuge (Plastocrafts , India), Water purification system (Bioage).

Eligibility criteria:

Candidates must have a minimum of 50% in Masters degree from Universities of the state or any other University recognized as equivalent in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics or any other life science related courses. Candidates with a B.E. /B. Tech. in Biotechnology or Bioinformatics, Bachelors of Pharmacy/ Agriculture/ Veterinary, MBBS and BDS are also eligible to apply.

Candidates who have appeared for the M.Sc. /B.E. final exams can also apply. Upon selection, a provisional degree certificate should be submitted to the respective colleges within two weeks of course commencement.

Entrance exam:

Karnataka Biotechnology Aptitude Test (KBAT):

KBAT is an online examination which aims to test the fundamental and concepts in Biology (particularly general and cell & molecular biology), Aptitude and English.

KBAT consists of 100 multiple choice questions which need to be answered in 100 minutes.

Short listed candidates will be called for an interview at Bangalore.

Placements: 100% internship placement. The entire batch of fifteen students from both domains has been placed for job internship across India.
